Hands Up - who else is sick of spam?
By Rik Tairea

I don't mean the mystery meat that comes in a blue can (I've never tasted the stuff myself). I mean the mass-delivered, unrequested commercial advertising rubbish delivered via e-mail or posted in discussion groups that is extremely of low or no value what so ever to anyone (pretty good definition huh).

Spam has many definitions and can come in many forms, shapes and sizes. In some cases one persons spam is another persons treasure (and in some cases livelihood). The two main places I encounter spam is in my e-mail or at the webmaster forums that I frequent. I can sum up my feelings for spam in one word, annoyed. So guess what? I'm sick of it and I just need to vent.

For some reason I have more than 5 e-mail accounts (and a couple of Hotmail accounts), don't ask me how I ended up with that many but I'm sure a few of you have a similar amount (or even more). Guess what? They all get spammed on a regular basis.

I expected my Hotmail accounts to receive junk mail because of all the stories I kept on hearing but I didn't realize there would be so much of it, it just keeps on coming and coming. It's so bad that I'll receive the same piece of spam 3 times over in the space of a week despite my attempts to block it using the junk mail filters.

Here's a word of warning, don't submit your websites to FFA's (free for all sites) unless you want 70 pieces of spam in your e-mail on a daily basis for about three weeks (stop laughing at me, I only did it once). Good thing that e-mail address was web based and free because I was forced to close it down and stop using it.

Over the last couple of weeks (at the time of writing this), all of my e-mail accounts have received the same spam advertising about a Multi Level Marketing scheme called Cash Evolution. I'm not a stranger to MLM spam because I usually get it now and then but I've received "information" about Cash Evolution around 20 times.

Now for all I know, Cash Evolution could be a good scheme (I doubt it though) but I'll never investigate what it's about because all this spam has left a bad taste in my mouth. Out of all the e-mail I received about this company I've probably only read about 2 lines of info.

There lies the problem.

Because of all the spam I receive I have developed the habit of ignoring, and then deleting e-mails that have suspect subject headings or content. I can pretty much guarantee that I'm not the only person with e-mail that does this.

Like I said before, for all I know Cash Evolution could be a legitimate MLM scheme (which is not likely because MLM is a joke) but because of all the spam I refuse to look into it any further. But the real problem is that all spam that is going around is causing a negative effect on genuine offers and opportunities.

For example, I receive offers from companies wanting to advertise on my websites or offer me opportunities that sound very legit. The problem is that at first glance the message may look a little bit suspicious but turn out not to be, which in turn can cause the old ignore and delete reflex action. When that is done it could mean that I have missed a good opportunity that could have benefited me.

The major problem is that I'm not the only person who does this and apparently, it's done on a very large scale. This results in innocent e-mails and newsletters getting caught in the crossfire.

Now I have no solution for this matter, spam is here to stay and if one spammer goes down then 50 others come in and take their place. You can use anti-spam programs/services but in the end they are not the total solution because they are not 100% affective. The only thing I can do is not to send any spam myself and hope others have the same idea.

Spam SUCKS!
